<note>A compelling need to know is a dominant characteristic of human being as well as of other species. The surreptitious swipe of a finger along a surface marked with the sign Wet Paint shows the compulsive tendency to confirm for ourselves the truth of the statement. Science is an extension of this confirming process. We are all like scientists at such moments although many of us have never learned scientific terminology of the formal steps of scientific research. To illustrate we will describe the "Wet Paint" example in formal scientific terms. The "Wet Paint" signs represents a statement by the painter about the condition of the paint. It leads us to guess (or hypothesize) that the paint is in fact wet or dry and curiosity impels us to test that hypothesis. An experiment is conducted by swiping the fingertip across the paint. Thus we obtain data: the surface is smooth or sticky."</note>
