<note>In our approach to Christian moral theology today, two equally erroneous trends must be avoided. One is to build a philosophy of moral conduct on popular platitudes and ambiguous slogans with little or no relation to the austere realities of the gospel message. And another would be to revert to the legalism of the past and ignore the insights present in the signs of our current age. The solid contemporary moral theologian can afford to do neither. The road to relevance for him in this field will necessarily take him through a thorough examination of tradition to an encounter with a modern world of incredibly rapid change and on to a future that is at once more warmly human and more truly Christian. It is not an easy road, but it is a challenging one. And it's the challenge that Father Haring confronts in this book as he shares with us the insights of his scholarship and prayer. For those who participate with him in his concern for the future, the trip, though arduous, will indeed be thoroughly rewarding.</note>
