Techniques of divination forewarn them of impending dangers and indicate auspicious moments for action; magic permits the course of events to be influenced along more favourable lines. Auspices can be ascertained in number of ways: from the flight of the birds, by referring to sign revealed in dreams, by studying the movements of stars, through inspecting the livers of sacrificial pigs, by reference to omen calendars and through careful attention to certain physiological responses of one's own body.
