<note>In the village around the midle reaches of the Mahakam river in East Kalimantan, Indonesia the Benuaq and Tunjung Dayaks continue to practise the arts of divination and magic as they done for many generations. Techniques of divination forewarn them of impending dangers and indicate auspicious moments for action; magic permits the course of events to be influenced along more favourable lines. Auspices can be ascertained in number of ways: from the flight of the birds, by referring to sign revealed in dreams, by studying the movements of stars, through inspecting the livers of sacrificial pigs, by reference to omen calendars and through careful attention to certain physiological responses of one's own body. Magic has been employed with many intention: to protect one form injury in battle or from assault by spirits, to heal the sick, to capture the love of the shy or unwilling, to spend people mad, to separate an enemy from a spouse, to rise from the dead.</note>
