Some difficulties of this kind have been resolved by the recovery of lost meanings of Hebrew words by reference to Semitic philology. There are, however, many instances in the Hebrew Bible thought not so many as to impair the general integrity of the text of corruptions arising from copyists' errors and their perpetuation. In this book, subject to a warning that emendation should be resorted to only when it proves impossible to ascertain the meaning of the text as it stands, the student learns how to recognize the main types of copyists' errors and thus to know the appropriate corrections to be made.
