The direction of the change is still difficult to discern. But the recent invasion of new theoretical perspectives and research practices from Europe has agitated the whole realm of historical studies. In part because of the very nature of the material with which they work, intellectual historians are especially sensitive barometers of change within the profession. Indeed, they face a peculiar problem comparable to that confronted by anthropologists.
