Treasure of Qumran : My Story of the Dead Sea Scrolls

An autobiographical memoir by Archbishop Athanasius Yeshue Samuel, this book retells the true story of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 through the eyes of the Archbishop, one of the most crucial historical figures in the rescue of these ancient manuscripts. The book begins with a Bedouin shepherd who discovers ancient jars containing manuscripts in a cave in the limestone cliffs of Qumran, near the Dead Sea. These ancient manuscripts were later identified as Jewish religious texts and copies of the Hebrew Bible dating from the Second Temple period. The main narrative centers on the courageous efforts of Archbishop Samuel, who presided over the Syrian Orthodox Monastery of St. Mark in Jerusalem. In 1947, he was one of the first buyers to recognize the scrolls' extraordinary historical potential and decided to purchase them from an antiquities dealer despite the threat of war. The book depicts the political tensions and dangers as the Archbishop struggled to preserve and protect the scrolls. He even went so far as to smuggle the manuscripts to the United States in the early 1950s to exhibit and attempt to sell them to academic institutions worldwide. The conclusion of this memoir highlights the Archbishop's sacrifice and moral dilemma. To ensure the safety of this ancient heritage and its study by scholars and humanity, he ultimately allowed his collection to be acquired for safekeeping by a research institution. Today, the texts and fragments rescued by Archbishop Samuel, including the famous Scroll of Isaiah, can be viewed by the public in the Shrine of the Book complex at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
