<note>An in-depth analysis of the conflict between the Nazi regime and Christian institutions (Protestant and Catholic) in Germany. This book explores how the Church struggled to maintain its autonomy amidst Nazi attempts to control and subordinate religion to totalitarian ideology. It also outlines the tactics of Gleichschaltung (uniformity/coordination), whereby Hitler attempted to control and steer religious organizations in line with fascist ideology and racial supremacy. The book highlights the dilemma of Christian congregations and leaders who were faced with the difficult choice between compromising for the sake of institutional survival or engaging in theological resistance. It also discusses pro-Nazi groups within Protestant churches who attempted to blend Christian teachings with the Nazis' radical nationalism, including the implementation of the Arierparagraph (Aryan paragraph) which discriminated against Christians of Jewish descent. It also analyzes the spiritual resistance movement led by theologians such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Niemöller who rejected the conflation of Christian faith with Hitler's ideology. It also explains that although in the early stages the Nazis used the term "positive Christianity" to gain sympathy from the congregation, the regime's ultimate goal was to replace Christian values with the worship of the state and race.</note>
