On the Preacher and Preaching
A classic pastoral guide, a lengthy letter from the Bishop of Geneva to his newly ordained colleague, the Bishop of Bourges, from 1604. It offers timeless advice on how to deliver profound, effective, and compassionate sermons. Francis de Sales wrote this letter because his friend was feeling uncertain and afraid of taking on the enormous responsibility of a preacher. Through his work, Francis sought to soothe his friend and provide much-needed practical and theological methods for ministers of the word. Preachers should prepare their sermons diligently through biblical study, but surrender to the Holy Spirit in their delivery remains paramount. The message must be good news imbued with God's love. Sermons that are overly aggressive or judgmental will only lead to conversion. Before a person is worthy to rise to the pulpit to speak about God, he must first spend time with God. The preacher's piety is key to the authoritativeness of his message. This book examines various essential aspects of preaching, starting from the preacher's motivation, the importance of prayer preparation, to delivery techniques so that the Gospel message can be understood by congregations from various circles and backgrounds.
