<note>Exploring the deep historical debate surrounding the reasons for the execution of nearly 200 Catholics during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, this book examines whether they were truly religious martyrs or political traitors. During Elizabeth I's reign, England experienced a formal religious shift toward Protestantism through the Elizabethan Settlement. Catholics who refused to submit to the Queen as head of the church were branded as heretics. This book examines the treason laws used by Elizabeth's regime to criminalize the Catholic faith. Elizabeth's government argued in court that the executed victims were not religious martyrs, but rather treasonous. After Pope Pius V issued a letter of excommunication (Regnans in Excelsis) in 1570 that "removed" Elizabeth from the throne, any Catholic priest (especially Jesuits and missionaries) entering England was often considered a threat to national security and a stooge of a foreign power (such as Spain). The book also outlines the defenses of the victims and Catholic apologists. They insist that the treason laws were merely a pretext. Catholics were persecuted for refusing to abandon traditional English Catholicism and for recognizing the queen's secular sovereignty over spiritual matters. For them, their deaths were a sacred sacrifice for the faith that England had held for centuries. The author presents a critical analysis of the tragic circumstances in which the line between religious loyalty and political treason was deliberately blurred by the monarchy. The book shows how conscience and pure religious practice were politicized into grounds for cruel executions (such as hanging, drawing, and quartering).</note>
