A Time to Speak
Bishop Butler's new book is a personal statement of those judgments and decisions which have shaped the manner of his Christian living. It is an apologia of the twentieth century written by a man who, though keenly aware of the authenticity of the movement towards Christian unity as early as the 1920s, was forced to concede the claims of the Roman Catholic Church upon his own loyalty. His account of his early childhood in a devout Anglo-Catholic family, his conversion to Roman Catholicism and his subsequent life which has seen him successively as Abbot of Downside and a Bishop concerned in the highest councils of the Church, paints a fascinating spiritual panorama of a long and distinguished life. It is the story of the journey of a brilliant mind through the problems, anguishes, joys, friendships, decisions, chaos and ultimately the tranquility which are life. Bishop Butler offers 'A Time to Speak' to the reader in the hope that it may help him to understand his world a little better, to make his own considered judgments and to move on to his own responsible decision.
