Portraits of Jesus: Mark (A Contextual Approach to Bible Study)
Who is Jesus for us today? This book explores Mark's portrait of Jesus in three contexts, such as: (a) Jesus' own context; (b) The context of Mark and those for whom the gospel was written; (c) Our own situation today. From the interaction of these backgrounds a picture develops which strengthens our understanding of Jesus and his message for us now. Eight passages are chosen for study and reflection. They vividly portray the portrait which Mark wished to paint, emphasising Jesus' humanity and the undercurrent of a mesianic secret which runs through Mark's gospel - Jesus as God's secret agent. This commentary emerges from the author’s work with various Bible study groups in South Africa, and so reflects the different denominational, racial and socio-economic contexts of those involved. It offers a method that Bible study groups in many different contexts can follow. For use by Bible study groups as well as by individuals, this book will guide anyone seeking to understand and relate Jesus’ message to their own historical and social background.
