<note>For many years Mark's, the 'neglected' gospel, was overshadowed by the other three. In recent times it has been 'rediscovered' and recognised as no less theological than that of the other evangelists. Mark is above all the author of a book which is both a work of art and a document of great theological sophistication. Wilfred Harrington presents a convincing case for a new look at Mark's gospel. He argues that Mark is a talented writer as well as a theologian almost the equal of Paul. He shows that Mark has an eye for detail and could structure his material with great skill. This commentary studies the gospel in its total historical context : the Jewish War, the destruction of the Temple and the disillusionment of the early Christians that the parousia did not immediately follow. The suffering of the Messiah and the difficulties of his disciples are therefore viewed as crucial elements of Mark's unique perception.</note>
