Office Psalms: From Rolle’s Psalter and S. Augustine’s Enarrationes
This book is a devotional and reflective work that presents a selection of psalms used in the Divine Office, or daily prayer of the Church, enriched by two primary sources: the Psalter by Richard Rolle (a medieval English mystic) and the classic commentary by Saint Augustine in Enarrationes in Psalmos. Through this combination, the author presents an approach that combines the mystical tradition (Rolle), which emphasizes inner experience, and the patristic tradition (Augustine), which emphasizes in-depth theological interpretation. Content-wise, this book not only presents the text of the psalms but also includes: (a) translations and spiritual adaptations of the Psalms, primarily through the Rolle tradition, known for its personal and contemplative approach to Scripture, and (b) theological explanations and interpretations drawn from Enarrationes in Psalmos, a collection of sermons and commentaries by Saint Augustine on the entire Book of Psalms. This interpretation emphasizes the Christological meaning, that the psalms reflect the voice of Christ and the Church, and (c) liturgical use, namely how the psalms are used in the Church's daily prayer (Office), so that readers are invited to understand the psalms not simply as texts, but as prayers living within the tradition of faith. Overall, this book aims to help readers, especially Christians who live a life of prayer, understand the spiritual meaning of the psalms more deeply, to experience the psalms as personal and communal prayer, and to connect the biblical texts to daily spiritual life. Essentially, this book is a guide to meditation on the Psalms that combines the heritage of the Middle Ages and the early Church, making it a rich source of reflection on faith deeply rooted in Christian tradition.
