Enquiries into Religion and Culture
This book is a collection of essays that explore the profound relationship between faith (spirituality) and culture, as well as the socio-economic impact of modern culture on individuals. The book also covers the passing of industrialism, the Catholic understanding of the human person, Islamic mysticism, and Christian views on sexuality. The author argues that modern Western culture is unique in its tendency to neglect its spiritual roots. Modernity replaces tradition and connection with nature with the impersonal, materialistic organization of mass society. He also asserts that religion is the primary foundation of every culture. When this synthesis between religion and society declines, civilization undergoes rapid social change until a new synthesis emerges. In each essay, the author warns against the dangers of a secular sociology that ignores the spiritual dimension, but he also warns against the dangers of a 'false spirituality' that ignores sociological insights. He argues that the crisis in modern civilization cannot be resolved with material solutions alone but requires spiritual vitality and a 'new application of religion to life'.
