<note>The Development of Consciousness: A Confluent Theory of Values (1976) is a book by Brian P. Hall (and Patrick Smith) that offers a new approach to values education and psychological development. The book argues that the modern social crisis is fundamentally a crisis of values, and proposes a developmental synthesis (confluent theory) to understand how values develop as human consciousness develops. This approach, which integrates the cognitive (thought) and affective (emotion/feeling) domains in the learning process, ensures that values are not only understood intellectually but also internalized. The book charts how individuals transition from lower levels of consciousness (focused on self-survival) to higher levels (focused on community, systems, and universal values). Values are viewed as behavioral expressions of consciousness, evolving as one's understanding of oneself and one's environment increases, supporting and challenging to stimulate the growth of consciousness, in line with optimal psychology theory (similar to the concept of flow in positive psychology).</note>
