The Inquisition (12th–19th century) was a series of Roman Catholic judicial institutions established to root out, try, and punish heresy across Europe and its colonies, notorious for using interrogation, torture, and public executions (auto-da-fé) to enforce religious conformity. It evolved from fighting medieval sects to targeting Protestants, Jews, and Muslims
