The Reformation in Ireland Under Elizabeth, 1558-1580
The Reformation in Ireland under Elizabeth I (1558–1580) was a state-driven initiative that largely failed to gain support among the native population, who remained predominantly Catholic. Enforced as part of English policy, it was viewed as an extension of colonization, resulting in limited success, a severe shortage of Protestant preachers, and widespread resistance from both Gaelic and Old English communities
