The Treaty of the Lateran

The Lateran Treaty of 1929 was a historic agreement between the Kingdom of Italy (represented by Benito Mussolini) and the Holy See (Pope Pius XI) that ended the Roman Question of 1870. It recognized Vatican City as a fully sovereign state, established Catholicism as the state religion of Italy, and provided financial compensation of 750 million lire for the loss of the papal territories. It regulated the relationship between church and state, including the position of the Catholic Church in Italy. Signed on 11 February 1929 in the Lateran Palace, it marked the end of the Pope's imprisonment and restored diplomatic relations between the Church and Italy.
