The Devastated Vineyard

Dietrich von Hildebrand's The Devastated Vineyard (first published 1973) is a critical analysis of the theological and moral crisis in the Catholic Church after Vatican II. Von Hildebrand, a supporter of the Council, highlights the confusion, heresies, and failure of authority (the bishops) to stem the destruction of the faith, which he likens to a ruined vineyard. Von Hildebrand warns against despair and passivity. He calls on the faithful to resist error, love the Church, and fight for the truth. The book is considered a warning against the dangers of modernism and a call to Catholics to remain steadfast in the traditional faith amidst the great crisis gripping the Church.
