Nuclear Physics in Peace and War
The theme of this book is the discoveries made in this century about the nucleus of the atom, and the effects of these discoveries on the lives of men. Dr Hodson traces in his first two chapters the early history of atomic energy from the discoveries of a handful of men at Cambridge to its subsequent development into weapons which have threatened the world since 1945 and into a source of energy whose potential is virtually unlimited. Subsequent chapters discuss the biological effects of radiation, the peaceful applications of atomic energy-power stations, radioactive isotopes, propulsion that have been developed so far together with what is hoped for the future. Dr Hodgson then explains exactly what happens in a nucelar explosion from the first heatflash to the distribution of fall-out and strontium 90, what is known of the genetic effects of radiation and the practical problems of nuclear warfare-civil and active defence, its strategy and its limitations. The final chapters discuss the morality of muclear war with particular reference to the teaching of the Church and the problems posed by international control of nuclear weapons and multilateral disarmament.
