Dr Hodson traces in his first two chapters the early history of atomic energy from the discoveries of a handful of men at Cambridge to its subsequent development into weapons which have threatened the world since 1945 and into a source of energy whose potential is virtually unlimited. Subsequent chapters discuss the biological effects of radiation, the peaceful applications of atomic energy-power stations, radioactive isotopes, propulsion that have been developed so far together with what is hoped for the future. Dr Hodgson then explains exactly what happens in a nucelar explosion from the first heatflash to the distribution of fall-out and strontium 90, what is known of the genetic effects of radiation and the practical problems of nuclear warfare-civil and active defence, its strategy and its limitations.
