<note>Church, State, and Conscience is a collection of essays which range far and wide in their interests - from the position of Catholics in a 'pluralist' society, to Newman on conscience, Mr. Santamaria's 'movement', capital punishment, papal infallibility, and Catholic-Communist 'dialogue'. However, all the essays are concerned in one way or another with the relationship between the individual conscience and the state and the church respectively. From this point of view, Church, State, and Conscience is an attempt to come to grips with some of the central issues in political philosophy - the relationship between church and state, the nature of the liberal or pluralist or 'free' society, the rights of conscience.</note>
