Apostolic Sanctity in the World: A Symposium on Total Dedication in the World and Secular Institutes

Apostolic Sanctity in the World: A Symposium on Total Dedication in the World and Secular Institutes. As Catholic Action continued to grow in the post-war period, new paths opened for the laity. They increasingly felt called to dedicate their lives to the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, not as vowed religious, but in the world. From 1949 to 1961, Father Joseph E. Haley, C.S.C. (1915–1987) raised awareness about this new form of consecration: the secular institutes. His efforts to develop secular institutes in the United States included organizing conferences, establishing an information center at the University of Notre Dame, publishing various periodicals and books, and founding the short-lived Institute of the Word. Through these activities, he pioneered secular consecrated life in the United States during the years before the Second Vatican Council.
