The Fifth Lateran Council (1512-1517) and the Eastern Churches
The Fifth Council of the Lateran (1512–1517) focused on internal reform of the Catholic Church, restoring peace among Christian rulers, and establishing papal supremacy, as well as planning a new crusade against the Turks, but it did not deal directly with the Eastern Churches, focusing instead on internal disciplinary and doctrinal issues in the run-up to the Protestant Reformation sparked shortly after the council's conclusion with Martin Luther's 95 Theses. Although there were plans for a new crusade (which ultimately failed), in-depth discussion of unification or substantive relations with the Eastern (Orthodox or Oriental) Churches was not a central issue in its decrees, as it had been at earlier councils (e.g., Lyon or Florence).
