<note>Edith Stein (1891–1942), was a prominent German-Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism and became a Carmelite nun. Once an atheist, she discovered Catholicism after reading the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila and was baptized in 1922. Her search for truth led her to faith, before being murdered in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by the Nazis on August 9, 1942, for her solidarity with her people. Edith Stein is revered as one of the patron saints of Europe, a symbol of the encounter between faith and reason.</note>
