From the story of her activities there emerges a clear picture of an outstandingly energetic and forceful woman happily gifted with a keen sense of fun and humour, who, when she saw clearly her true vocation, set aside very obvious prospects of comfort and security through marriage to devote all her strength and ability to the work she was called to do. Making use of much new, and hitherto unpublished material in particular letters from Mother Margaret's own Sisters and friends this book describes her early life and humble background: how she started a small community of Sisters, later to become recognised as a religious congregation, to work among poor people in industrial towns. It shows how amongst her other achievements she founded poor schools, a hospital, orphanages, and eventually religious houses in the Midlands and the South of England.
