St. Clare of Assisi
Saint Clare of Assisi was a young noblewoman who left her luxurious life behind to live in poverty and devote herself to God, following in the footsteps of Saint Francis. She founded the Poor Clares Order and was renowned for her strong faith, especially her miracle of driving away enemies with a monstrance (Holy Eucharist) that protected the monastery of San Damiano. She is famous for her devotion to the Eucharist and her deep prayer life; even when she was ill, she could ‘see’ Mass on the wall of her room. The story of Saint Clare is one of transformation from worldly wealth to spiritual poverty, total dedication to Christ, and the extraordinary power of prayer, making her a model of faith for many people.
