Those That Sowed: The First Religious Sisters in Australia
Those That Sowed tells the story of the first Nuns to come to Australia, a band of five Irish Sisters of Charity. Their Foundress and Superior General, Mother Mary Augustine Aikenhead, had generously answered the plea of Archbishop Polding for help for the women convicts of the Botany Bay Penal Settlement and after a journey of four and a half months the five Sisters landed in Sydney Cove on 31st December, 1838. It is a story of high hopes and bitter disappointments, of loyalty evoked and opposition aroused, of struggle and frustration and disapointment, of tenacity and generosity and courage in the service of God, a story that forms an integral part of the history of the Church of this country.
