Saint Anthony of Padua (born Fernando in Lisbon, Portugal, 1195) was a renowned Franciscan theologian and preacher, born of noble birth but an Augustinian monk before joining the Franciscan Order, inspired by the martyrdom of Franciscan missionaries in Morocco; he is renowned for his fiery preaching, theological brilliance, piety, ability to explain complex doctrines, and his miracles, making him one of the most popular saints in the Catholic Church, the patron saint of lost things, and the defender of the poor.
