The renewal of the Catholic Church willed by the second Vatican Council has came to a standstill, and with it and with it ecumenical understanding with other christian churches and a new opening out towards the contemporary world. Five years after after the council ended this is a situation that can no longer be ignored, and for churchmen and theologians to remain silent would be unwise.
