The Phenomenon of Religion
This book argues that religion is a complex and multidimensional human phenomenon that cannot be adequately explained by a single discipline. Smart proposes a method of methodological agnosticism, which involves temporarily suspending questions about the transcendental truth of religious claims (whether God really exists, etc.) in favor of an objective description of how religion is experienced and practiced in human life. Smart's goal is to provide a scientific and comparative framework for the impartial and empathetic study of religion. He introduces a well-known schema, outlining seven dimensions of religion observable across religious traditions around the world. By objectively understanding these dimensions, readers are better positioned to assess and understand religion wisely in the context of a pluralistic world.
