Mysticism Sacred and Profane: An Inquiry Into Some Varieties of Praeternatural Experience
In his influential book, Mysticism Sacred and Profane, R.C. Zaehner argued that mystical experiences can be classified into three distinct types and rejected the perennial philosophical view that all mystical experiences are equal. Overall, Zaehner argued that doctrinal differences between religious traditions are crucial in shaping and interpreting mystical experiences, and challenged the notion that all mystical experiences are fundamentally the same.
