Freedom Today

Hans Küng's book Freedom Today, published in 1966, is a collection of essays exploring the concept of freedom, particularly in the context of Roman Catholic theology and the post-Vatican II Church. The book's primary focus is to demonstrate and encourage the 'new winds of freedom' blowing through the Catholic Church at the time. Küng writes in a free spirit, not as a rigid apologist, but as a theologian engaged in open discussion about the role of freedom in faith and ecclesial life. Küng argues that the Church should function as a community of free people called to pursue a theology of freedom independently. While discussing the role of the Holy Spirit in the world, Küng carefully distinguishes the Holy Spirit from the institution of the Church itself. This is done to highlight the Church's human nature and, therefore, the Church's need to be open to correction and reform. In short, Freedom Today is a call to a mature and responsible understanding and practice of Christian freedom, both within ecclesial structures and in private life, and serves as an important marker of progressive theological thought in the mid-20th century.
