In 1935, with a false sense of finality, I published nine of these sermons, borrowing from Francis Thompson the title Heaven and Charing Cross. The book is out of print ling since and the question arose whether it was time to republish it with additions. After much stock-taking, I have decided to preserve only a few of that earlier series, my own favourites and match them with later variations on the same inexhaustible theme. Of the chapters which follow, only the first, the seventh and the thirteenth have been published before in book form, the res are new.
