<note>Fra Girolamo Savonarola is the story of an Italian monk and preacher who opposed the corruption and luxury of the Catholic Church, as well as the tyrannical rulers of Florence. After successfully overthrowing the Medici family, Savonarola became the leader of Florence and established a republic based on religious values and asceticism. However, he came into conflict with Pope Alexander VI and was eventually excommunicated, arrested, tortured, and executed by hanging and burning in 1498 for charges of forgery and rebellion. He joined the Dominican order and devoted his life to studying the Bible. After moving to Florence, he became known for his fiery and prophetic sermons, calling for repentance and moral purification. Savonarola strongly opposed Pope Alexander VI and the corrupt practices of the Catholic Church, making him an enemy of the Pope. On May 23, 1498, Savonarola and two of his followers were hanged and then burned in Florence as a form of punishment. Despite his defeat, his teachings survived in a movement known as the Piagnoni.</note>
