Renouncement in Dante
Treat of the spirit renouncement as the Charateristic as the characteristic element of Catholic and near Catholic pens. The principle is elucidated by illustrations in number from the work of minor poets, and finally by the choice of Dante and Milton as examples of men, both deeply touched by religious conviction, as supreme examples of the Catholic and non Catholic poet in this regard. Dante determines the depth or height of a soul's final award by the amount of sacrifice or of selfishness in his life-motives. Eternal misery or happiness in the poetry of Milton have other causes.
