Father Charles of Mount Argus

Saint Charles of Mount Argus was a Dutch Passionist priest who spent most of his life ministering in Ireland, particularly at the Mount Argus Retreat in Dublin, where he died in 1893. Although he was a Passionist charged with spreading devotion to the Passion of Christ through preaching, Charles lacked the gift of a preacher. However, he had a remarkable gift for comforting the confessional and ministering to the sick. He was beloved by the Irish people for his humility, simplicity, and gift for ministering to the sick and consoling the confessional, although he was not a good preacher. He is considered a modern Irish saint, a rare figure in Irish history as he is the only canonized saint to have died in Ireland.
