<note>There is hardly any tragedy in history so complete, from what is called the common sense point of view, as that of Jeanne D'Arc. She was modest and retiring, yet she was forced to lead armies to battle in the dress of a man; she was an ardent and saintly Christian, yet she was cast out from the Church that she loved, as a heretic, a blasphemer, and an 'invoker of devils', she was an sensitive girl, yet she suffered wounds, she was imprisoned with extreme rigour, and died by fire; she gave up her effective life for a worthless man, she was transparently sincere, yet she was so worked upon by abuse and charges of bad faith, that she was tempted to doubt her own word and the evidence of her senses, she accomplished everything to which God called her, yet she was universally denounced as a failure and a braggart. Finally she was sold by her friends into the hands of her enemies, among whom were certain chief priests, in the midst of her torments it seemed that God had forsaken her, and at the close of them she cried out that she had found peace.</note>
