Bishop Challoner: A Biographical Study derived from Dr. Edwin Burton's
Bishop Richard Challoner (1691–1781) was a highly influential English Roman Catholic prelate, scholar, and writer who helped preserve the Catholic faith in England during a time of significant persecution and legal restrictions. After being born Protestant, he became Catholic in his youth, studied at Douai College, and returned to England in 1730 to serve as a missionary priest. As an indefatigable writer, he produced influential works, including a revision of the Douay Bible and the devotional work The Garden of the Soul. He was ordained a priest in 1716 and appointed a bishop in 1758, continuing his work until his death in 1781.
