The Story of Mount Melleray
Mount Melleray refers to a Trappist (Cistercian) monastery in County Waterford, Ireland. Located on the Knockmealdown Mountains near Cappoquin, it was the first Trappist monastery founded in Ireland after the Reformation. The monastery is a center of spiritual life, offering hospitality to pilgrims, running a guesthouse and cafe, and maintaining extensive pilgrim paths on its grounds. The site is also known for the Melleray Grotto, an area below the monastery where apparitions of the Virgin Mary reportedly occurred in 1982, marked by a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes.
