This little volume is issued in commemoration of the fourth century of the death of Jerome Savonarola, who was executes on May 23, 1498. I have not approached the subject with any notion of presenting the famous preacher in a new light, nor have I written for scholars to whom the copious literature on Savonarola is available, but for those to whom many of these works may not be accessible. In the first part of this sketch the public career of Savonarola is presented after the manner or a chronicle; in the second part I have endeavored to give a picture of the man, illustrated by his own writings, which are considered in an appendix.
