Spiritual Songs: from English MSS of Fourteenth to Sixteenth Centuries
With the seventeenth century, a change begins whether in the metaphysical, Donne and his would-be followers, or in the more classical lyric of Jonson, even of Herrick. Never again have we had, or shall have, sch blend of simplicity of feeling and perfection of art, unless it be by the change of a moment in a poet like Blake, one born out of due time. and what is true of the love-songs is equally so of the religious songs of these ages, profoundly as they differ in spiritual quality. Just as simply pagan and sensuous as are the former so simply and single-mindedly Christian are the latter.
