The first thing that needs to be said about the Dutch Catechism, particularly in view of the Kind of publicity it has had, is that it is an extremely good piece of work. It blends biblical, doctrinal, moral, liturgical and practical instruction together, according to the best principles of modern catechetics. A priest should feel quite happy to put it in the hands of sixth-formers, or those under instruction, or Catholics wishing to deepen their understanding; it is a most valuable compendium of Catholic belief and practice, in a contemporary idiom. It abandons casuistry in favour of reason, magic in favour of faith. It is not untouched by poetry and it represents untouched by poetry and it represents vibrant, compelling orthodoxy. It is a genuine pleasure to recommend this book: it can do nothing but good, it might even be revolutionary.
