This volume contains all the autobiographical material which Cardinal Newman left behind him I his room when he died. Some is now published for the first time, some of it has appeared in print time, some has appeared in modified form, with certain passages cut at the editor's discretion as being too intimate them to be made public. It is here presented by one whose knowledge of Newman was unique. Now that the great cardinal is coming to be recognized as one of the major intellectual forces in the nineteenth century Church, these unsparing revelations of the most intimate workings of his mind and heart become something more than the documentation of a brilliant, complex and devout Catholic personality, living in an age of great personalities.
