The reorganization of pastoral work now in progress aims at expanding the impact and value of its hitherto ritualistically conceived activities. Most of these efforts are concerned with organization and methodology: more intensive application or more appropriate and efficient use of new and existing means and manpower. All this should imply, and certainly requires, equally active theological reflection, which in this context comes under the heading of pastoral theology. Plenty of work is being done in this direction, as is evidenced by the number of books and articles available on the subject. But it is a subject that, like any other, benefits much from the publication now and again of a book that presents a critical summary of work in progress, including lesser at the same time takes each promising lead a few steps further.
