The problem of authority - what kind of authority is allowable within the Church? Where does it reside? - is one of the major issues dividing Christians today, and one of the most intractable. In the search for a common mind the Person of Christ and the practice of the Early Church, as mirrored in the New Testament are of primary importance: and the unravelling of the developments of the first Christian centuries is equally vital an understanding of our present difficulties.
