Sanctus Paulus, the sacred Paul, that is the inscription on both sides of the venerable figure on the golden background of the tableau of Ugolino Lorenzetti. The onlooker sees here the picture of an Apostle, an old man with white hair and beard. His face is serious and he has bushy brows. The halo around him makes him plainly one illumined, chosen, and his repose betrays nevertheless tremendous power.
