In the arts Luke is above all Evangelist, and the Mediator of the Joyous Message. This function often devours, as it were, all his humane qualities, his individuality as well as the data of his life. Early Christian art has failed to develop his prototype, and there is no model which would at once allow us to recognize him as is the case with other saint, such as peter, the Apostles, or St. John. The fact alone that he appears together with the Four Evangelist who are permitted to reveal Christ and His Word, constitutes his dignity.
