<note>In Western art St. George is invariably represented as a dragon killer. In Eastern art he is also known without the dragon and is pictured sitting or standing. Always youthful and in soldier's outfit, a beautiful example is found in the Icon Museum in Recklinghausen, Westphalia. It dates from the sixteenth century and shows all of the features of the school of Moscow, which started about 1300 and during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries was a determining source of influence for all Russian icon painting.</note>
