Saint Francis of Assisi: A Biography

Giovanni de Pietro di Bernardone (ca 1181 – 3 October 1226), known as Francis of Assisi (Italian: Francesco d'Assisi; Latin: Franciscus Assisiensis) was a Roman Catholic friar who founded the Order of the Minor Fratrum in 1209. Francis was inspired to live a life of poverty as a preacher of the Gospel. One of the most revered figures in Christianity, Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on 16 July 1228. Francis is often depicted wearing a brown robe tied around his waist with three knots, symbolizing the three Franciscan vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. In 1219, Francis decided to travel to Egypt to try to persuade Sultan Malik el-Kamil to end the Fifth Crusade. In 1223, Francis organized the first live Nativity scene as part of the annual Christmas tradition in Greccio. According to Christian tradition, in 1224 Francis received the stigmata while experiencing a divine vision of the angel Seraphim.
